the hutch.

30.1.14

Remember the empty rooms?  I didn't show the back of the sofa where this super fun, super CORAL painted hutch resides.

I love this thing - the storage, the color, the everything about it.  But I don't love the blah nature of the top half.  It had doors on it, but I wasn't digging the doors.  So, I took them off and took the shelves out and threw a wreath in it until I could think of something to do.

And the idea of lining the inside back of this section came to life.  Fabric? Wallpaper? what to use?  I knew I wanted something to add color, but not TOO much color. And I didn't want a striped pattern because the room and it's adjoining office have so many stripes.  I  was thinking floral, but really, I'm not a flowery kind of girl. I love damask, and modern and stripes. Those are my go-to patterns.

Like always, I sat on it for a few days.  And I woke up this morning with an idea!  As soon as my children hit the bus today I sprang into action.  In our basement (think dirt, low ceilings, 200 year old basement), I had a bin.  In that bin was a collection of fabrics that I've purchased AT RANDOM over the past 10 years.  I am that person who buys a fabric because it's pretty and I can't resist - even though I have exactly no use for it.

After digging and digging and realizing I would have to wash my slippers, I found it!  THE fabric.

Isn't it pretty?!  It's a beautiful blend of floral AND damask and an array of amazing colors.  I swoon.

I literally had to stop myself from canceling appointments today just so I could finish this.  But I was a good mommy and did all of my good mommy duties. I swear.  pinky swear.

The whole process of lining the back of this hutch took almost no time. It took me longer to decide if this was THE fabric or not.  It is.  I love it.

So, I grabbed my trusty can of spray adhesive:

This stuff is awesome. It's repositionable, sticky as heck and doesn't get all over everything in the vicinity when you spray it! yay for THAT.

I cut my fabric to about the size of the back - leaving 1-2 inches overhang on all sides.

Once that was done, I just sprayed the back of the hutch with the glue and stuck the fabric up. I didn't take pictures because honestly I was too excited to stop and detail it.  BUT, you get the idea.  Once the fabric was up, I had 2 inches of overhang to deal with.   All I did was take my sharp sharp utility knife (it's pink - don't be jealous) and I carefully cut the extra fabric off of the edges.  Note: your knife has to be SHARP to get through upholstery fabric like this.  Otherwise it will snag.

And so once that was finished, I was left with this:

If you look closely, you can see that this is far from perfect. There are spots that I cut crooked, etc.  I am not a perfectionist - as I've said before.  And this is going to be full of crap I'll have to dust, so no one will see the imperfections anyway.  Not to mention it's likely I'll change my mind on this twice in the next year and try a different look... no biggie.  :)

Here she is all loaded up:

I must say, I do love it!  Happy decorating!!!
