I have a little time to myself this afternoon and so whenever that happens (rare... oh.so.rare.), I love to sit and brainstorm on a room that I am working on. Today it's my kitchen and dining area. My kitchen is in pretty good shape. I love the bones of it, but I would love to accessorize it to be "cozier" - if that makes sense. Right now it's very clean and white and classic - I would love to use accessories to bring more of me into the space. You remember our kitchen:
Pretty standard. A few things since this picture was taken: We've replaced the cabinet you see all the way to the top left with open shelves. Love that. The barstools turned out to be pieces.of.crap. They are dinged, scratched and falling apart. I need to replace with something that will endure our children and daily breakfast lunch and dinner routine. I am considering painting the bottom portion of the island. Love the look of the wood, but I feel like it's too much wood with the floor and the island being the same color - I would love some distinction. Maybe light gray? teal? and then if the barstools go to white or even a pop of color - I might like it better.
So, Painting the island and even spraying the barstools and replacing the leather cushions with fabric are easy, cheap solutions to add interest to this space. But I am thinking accessorizing... like this:
I love the vintage jars for cereal.. and all the white pottery. It's classic, but interesting. That's what I'm going for. I'm not a modern neon green kind of girl - but I like things to blend with interest and casual elegance. :)
Or this - our kitchen has NO towel bars. None. All I have is the handle of the dishwasher and I've never been a fan of that look. What about this? I love it!
My island is always a source of stress for me - never knowing how to decorate it. The ceilings in my kitchen are LOW, so I am hesitant to bring in pendant lighting for that reason. I'm also not wanting to break the view of the rangehood. I like how that looks from the other end of the room - perfectly centered. So - bringing height into my kitchen is achieved by bringing stick-y, branch things into play.. a great example:

And a few examples of painted kitchen islands...

Out of all of them, the last two are my favorites. I love the calming effect of the colors, and love the contrast on the floor.
One last thing I'm thinking about is bringing rugs into my kitchen area. I've always been less than a fan of this because my kitchen floor is NEVER clean. We spill, the dogs puke, the wine spills... we're messy! I would hate to ruin a rug - but I feel like my kitchen would benefit from the texture of a rug. So, I'm going to try it. Some favorites:

I love this one - the mustard and gray really has my attention!

And this one's a fave because I'm in a current obsession with overdyed rugs. They look so dimensional and beautiful - gorgeous!

That's it for now... hit me with your ideas! I'd love to hear how you'd take a classic white kitchen and personalize it! Happy Saturday!
