Another snippet of our house! The master bath is something that we know we're lucky to have in the area we live in. Most houses in this area are 1 bathroom houses and so when we found this house with a MASTER? At a decent price? We were stoked!
Realistically, the master bathroom was the only room in the house that didn't need anything but a coat of paint. The floors were ok, the walls in good shape and while the color choices weren't my first choice, I could live with them until the time came when I had the money to demo and renovate.
We have these beautiful old pedestal sinks. They really are pretty. HOWEVER, no storage. zip. nada. no place to put your toothbrush! Hard to see, but I added a tiny Ikea shelf to the right of the window sink to hold our toothbrushes. Not the most ideal situation design wise, but at least we have somewhere to sit something. Unfortunately these sinks aren't conducive to counter space - the soap bottles have a hard time balancing because of the grooves in the actual sink for a bar of soap. Who uses a bar of soap any more?!?
If you turn to the left, you can see our shower. The doorway to enter the bath is to the right of this dresser. So, this massive dresser - which houses my hair dryer, all the girly essentials and my husband's stuff, extra towels, etc is kind of not a great solution because the side of it is the first thing you see when you walk into the bathroom and it's big. too big. The shower was a plain shower with forest green tile and clear glass doors. We have two daughters who have no sense of privacy, so in order to give my husband some modesty, I installed this window film on the outside of the glass (I bought it at 2jane). It works to provide the right amount of privacy for the person showering. Ideally, I want a bigger shower that has a little more privacy and a different prettier tile.
This is the other side of the bathroom (to take this photo, I'm standing in the doorway - see how close that dresser is?!). We have a lovely room in which our toilet has been cornered. It's a true "throne" room and I do NOT feel like a princess when I go into this room. In fact, I feel like I'm on display. It's not a good plan. If you're building a house, do not do this. It's a no-no. I added a random shelf to the wall with hooks for towels and robes. That's the only towel storage we have. And you can see the floor is not horrible - not my favorite, but not horrible.
To the right, you can see the entry to our master closet. We spent the money and outfitted this room with tall Ikea closet system and it.is.fabulous. Best decision ever. I also had our gorgeous hardwoods put into the closet. Love that.
So, the bathroom needs a redesign. If I lived in a perfect world, this bathroom would have a luxurious tub, because I could live in a tub. But alas, our home is old and the joists run the wrong way and so I can't put a tub in this room safely. According to my contractor, the weight of the water when the tub was filled will eventually cause damage to my kitchen ceiling which is right below this. Seriously.sad.face.
Taking a tub out of the equation leaves me lots of possibilities, but after much consideration and time, this is what I've come up with:
On paper it seems so blaaaaah... but it will be so pretty! Aside from the hexigon marble tile shown in this mockup, here's what I'm thinking. For the sink - we do not need two sinks. I know that most men and women out there can't share a space, but we can. We have these two pedestal sinks now and only one of them is ever dirty. We almost NEVER use the second sink. So goodbye to you. Instead, I would love to take an old piece of furniture - a dresser? buffet? bottom half of a china cabinet? and turn it into a sink. I want the cabinet to be the showstopper, so the sink will be simple... something like this:
I adore the way this looks - maybe not the YELLOW, but the idea is beautiful and rustic and visually to die for:
But maybe a little bigger? Like this guy is for sale right now on the devil's site (craigslist) for just a fraction of what it would cost to buy a new vanity. Granted, it comes with the risk of dying because of the whack jobs who sell things on there, but hey - what's life without risk?!
I love how the sink would take up the middle section and you still have storage on both sides. Sweet! I would also probably add 6" feet to this to bring it up a little higher. My biggest peeve in the bathroom is a low sink.
I would also love something like this:
Instead of the usual two mirrors you see in the master bath - I would love one awesome BIG mirror... like this:
And the lighting? This is from Shades of Light and is amazing - though way out of our price range. I would love to stalk Joss and Main for something this nice but affordable. At $300 a pop, this is definitely not an option, but I love the look of it!
So - having that resolved... what about the walls? I would love the wall behind the sink to be an accent wall. I am thinking pallet wood? Wallpaper? An awesome tile? Not sure yet - I haven't gotten that far, but I want it to bring texture and pattern into the room.
For the shower, I am in love with this layout - I love how there are half walls for a little privacy and the glass door. I also LOVE how they've tiled the ceiling to really define the space. The wall nook is awesome for all of our toiletries, and the whole thing just makes me happy.
When it comes to decorating a bathroom, I'm all about classic things. The tile on the floor, walls and shower will most definitely be classic. I do not want to deal with a tile renovation in 10 years when it's out of style. I'd much rather update my mirrors, lights and vanity than rip out tile. So, we are following the KISS theory on this one (Keep It Simple Stupid). Basic tile is definitely on my radar.
In the shower, I love the subway tile in this combined with the smaller tile in the nook:

And I LOVE this shower and the clean lines of the white tile. I would love this but wonder if it's too modern for the rustic/comfortable look I've got in mind. Or would it be a nice break in the not so modern details? only time will tell. :)

For the floor of the shower, I love this! The Quatrefoil marble tile is amazing!

See on the floorplan there's a teal "storage cabinet"? That's because we have stuff. Lots and lots of stuff with NO storage. While we might not use the sink together, we do use the mirror together, so I have it in my head that the little storage chest at this half wall would be a secondary "prep" area. The wall will be a half wall, so I would love to do something interesting with a mirror suspended from the ceiling over the wall and this type of chest in front of it:

And for the half wall? I thought this was clever:

Lastly - a chandelier in the bathroom? I love a chandelier in the bathroom... like this:

So that's it! What do you think? good plans? Now - who wants to fund this little project of mine? I need to save save save for it! Hopefully by this summer we can at least start SOMETHING in here... :) Happy Decorating!
