I don't know about you, but my kids are headed back to school on Monday. With that comes a lot of chaos, paperwork, early mornings, more paperwork and the daily rush to find everything they need for school. This year, I'm ON TOP OF IT. Last year, every day they would come home, kick off their shoes into a pile by the door, drop their coats where they stood and throw their backpacks into a corner. The next morning we would spend extra time looking for missing shoes, gloves, pencils and generally everything they ditched when they walked in. NOT THIS YEAR!!
Please allow me to introduce you to my kid closet. I think I'll name her Penelope.
It's a cabinet that I purchased at an estate sale a few years ago for less than $50. She's about to be a new best friend to my daughters and my sanity:
When we bought it, there were shelves inside - like 5 of them. Those have now been removed and sent to wherever it is shelves go when they die. I am left with an open space that is perfect for coat hooks and backpack homes.
Here's my plan:
1. Using my trusty sawzall, remove the out of date spindles that are just not happening.
2. Replace the spindles with lace? chicken wire? metal sheeting? Still percolating on this one...
3. Paint it some sort of appealing shade of happy childhood (so the children gravitate in that direction automatically).
4. In the top section, use pretty baskets to house items like hats, gloves, scarves. One for each child.
5. In the bottom section, add coat hooks for coats, backpack hooks and a shoe shelf for uniform shoes
6. Stand back and watch the clutter DISAPPEAR.
here's a rough idea (minus the paint) of what I'm thinking:
Wish me luck! This is the first week of school, so hopefully we can manage the clutter until I can finish this little project. And then... the tree was happy.
